Single stringed instrument9/28/2023 Some recent diddley bows are electrified with pickups. Some diddley bows have an added resonator box under the bridge, and are essentially single-string cigar box guitars. A glass bottle is usually used as the bridge, which helps amplify the sound. The diddley bow is typically homemade, consisting usually of a wooden board and a single wire string stretched between two screws, and played by plucking while varying the pitch with a metal or glass slide held in the other hand. The diddley bow is therefore not well represented in recordings. However, because it was considered a children's instrument, few musicians continued to play the diddley bow once they reached adulthood. The diddley bow is significant to blues music in that many blues guitarists got their start playing it as children, as well as the fact that, like the slide guitar, it is played with a slide. However currently, the diddley bow is also played by professional players as a solo as well as an accompaniment instrument. The diddley bow was traditionally considered an "entry-level" instrument, normally played by adolescent boys, who then graduate to a "normal" guitar if they show promise on the diddley bow. They were first documented in the rural South by researchers in the 1930s. The instrument was then developed as a children's toy by slaves in the United States. There, they were often played by children, one beating the string with sticks and the other changing the pitch by moving a slide up and down. The diddley bow derives from instruments used in West Africa. Other nicknames for this instrument include "jitterbug" or "one-string", while an ethnomusicologist would formally call it a " monochord zither". It may have been influenced to some degree by West African instruments. It was traditionally considered a starter or children's instrument in the Deep South, especially in the African American community, and is rarely heard outside the rural South. It consists of a single string of baling wire tensioned between two nails on a board over a glass bottle, which is used both as a bridge and as a means to magnify the instrument's sound. The diddley bow is a single-stringed American instrument which influenced the development of the blues sound. Beehive minecraft9/28/2023 In Bedrock Edition, a carpet is treated as an obstruction that removes the calming effect of the campfire's smoke. In Java Edition, the smoke coming through the carpet also calms the bees. Placing a carpet above the campfire leaves room for the bees to hover beneath the nest and still avoid taking fire damage. Smoke can pass through no more than one solid block, and only if that block is directly above the campfire. Harvesting from a beehive or bee nest causes any bees inside it to become aggravated toward the player, unless there is a fire directly beneath it or a lit campfire within five blocks below, and the smoke is not obstructed. This is the maximum distance a beehive can be from a campfire while applying the calming effect (5 blocks). The dispenser must be placed beside and facing the hive or nest. After harvesting, the hive or nest is reset to empty (honey level 0, with the default appearance).Īlternatively, honey or honeycomb can be harvested by powering a redstone dispenser containing either a glass bottle or shears. To harvest honeycomb, the player uses shears on the nest or hive, causing it to drop three honeycomb items. To harvest honey, the player uses a glass bottle on the nest or hive the bottle then becomes a honey bottle. (The dripping honey is decorative it cannot be collected in a cauldron.) These changes signal that the hive or nest is ready for harvesting. Once it's full, it changes its appearance to show honey oozing out and, if the block below it isn't a full solid block, starts dripping honey particles. When the bee exits, the hive increments its honey level by 1, to a maximum of 5. After it's done, it waits for daylight with no rain (if necessary), then exits to go collect more pollen. Once full, bee nests and beehives provide two harvestable products: honey and honeycomb.Įach time a bee enters a nest or hive covered in pollen, it starts converting it to honey and honeycomb. Igniting a nest or hive allows any bees inside to escape, possibly catching fire as they flee.īees are protected from a campfire by placing a carpet over it. They first look for one at the same coordinates as the last one they entered, but if there's no nest or hive there or it already contains 3 bees when they arrive, they search the nearby area for another one. They can enter through any unobstructed side, top, or bottom, but can exit only from the front, and only if it's unobstructed by a solid block (including a non-full solid block in Bedrock Edition).īees fly into a nest or hive at night, during rain, and after loading up with pollen from a flower. This holds true in any biome in any dimension, and for any flower including wither roses and flowering azaleas.īee nests and beehives can house up to 3 bees at a time. Oak, birch, or mangrove trees grown from saplings that are within 2 blocks (including diagonally) of a flower on the same y-level have a 5% chance to grow with a bee nest containing 1–3 bees. Bee nests occur naturally and cannot be crafted. Beehives can be crafted in a crafting table.

Her spike jonze love story9/28/2023 This pairing of our brains makes deep emotional connection among mammals possible. The authors describe a non-verbal exchange that happens between nearby nervous systems. A General Theory of Love, a book published in 2000 by Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini and Richard Lannon, introduced the concept of “limbic resonance”. Human importance starts in the ancient parts of our brains we understand the least. If you haven’t seen the film, I won’t give away any spoilers but, I will say, Theodore miscalculates his risk of loss. An OS (coupled with a smartphone or a smart car or your Internet of Things) can help with important tasks - or even trigger an emotional experience - but it can never embody importance. We often turn to virtual companions instead of our breathing ones in part because we try to manage the risks of deeper human connection. Virtual Companions and Relationship Risks There is an unavoidable potential of death, dementia, infidelity or change of heart. We unnecessarily lose attraction, cheat or turn away from important human beings because the longer we are in love with someone, the more we face the very real risk he or she will leave us. What is so dangerous about desiring someone you have is that you can lose him or her.” In his book Can Love Last? The Fate of Romantic Love Over Time, Dr. Why does this man-machine coupling succeed when Theodore’s marriage failed? The late relational psychologist Stephen Mitchell wrote, “Sustaining desire for something important from someone important is the central danger of emotional life. She appears to fall in love with him, too. (She’s not the Siri who curtly told me, “Sorry, I can’t look for places in Malaysia,” when I asked her for directions to a yoga studio last week.) Theodore falls in love with Samantha (or at least enacts a love story, including the familiar antagonisms of modern human relationships). She is self-aware (if not yet self-actualized), and her voice is simultaneously kind, caring, witty and sensuous. Samantha speaks to Theodore, and she sounds human despite her lack of a human body. Once Theodore installs the OS (who names herself “Samantha”), we see a more significant innovation. The opening scenes showcase a possible, predictable future. We see him at home, playing a virtual-reality video game using gestures - like those we might conduct with our hands in empty air today via Microsoft Kinect or a Leap MOTION controller. We see him at his job, ghostwriting personal letters on a computer by speaking into a microphone. Before this, he is overcome with loneliness, suffering through recollections of moments tracing their courtship and marriage, from happy to very challenging. Her’s main character Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), installs a new operating system after separating from his wife. The question we should chase is: How do we avoid killing love as we increasingly rely on helpful things like technology? Spike Jonze’s Her: On Love + Technology As we imagine what’s next, the challenge for designers and computer scientists is not how to make devices more human or more lovable. It’s a love story (or two) - but it’s also science fiction, delivering a clear point-of-view regarding how we’ll interact with technology in the generations to come. The central characters may be this man and his OS, but the movie asks necessary questions about the complexity of human relationships. Her, a Spike Jonze film, is about a man in a near-future time who falls for an artificially-intelligent operating system. We pay close attention to movies that have something important to say about love: What it is and what it’s not, how we find love (and avoid losing it) or why we need it in our lives …

Grep ignore case not working9/28/2023 If you are going to use grep, you might try -i instead of character classes for a case-insensitive match. )", as well as the need for quotes around your character sets, so I won't beat you up about those any more. Others have already explained that you should be using a contruct like x="$(grep. If you use "$ch" then put in something that matched one of your cases, it would have assigned "grep" to x, then tried to execute -o and likely thrown an error. None of your options were "ch", so no lines executed. The $() should work on every fully POSIX compatible shell, but /bin/sh may not be fully compatible, so using a specific shell is a good idea anyway. But be sure to begin your script with #!/bin/bash, as /bin/sh often is another shell than bash where the syntax may not work. In bash you have the nice syntax (which can be nested) x="$(grep -o '' abc.txt|wc -l)" I added quotes, as you get a problem without quotes when your command does not return anything, as x= is a syntax error while x="" is perfectly fine. Which means execute grep|wc in a subshell and assign the result to the variable x. The correct syntax is x="`grep -o '' abc.txt|wc -l`" This of course doesn't make sense, but you can be glad you didn't try something like x=something rm * which would have deleted your files. You're assigning grep to the variable x for running -o abc.txt, as var=something command assigns the variable just for running command. Your problem is not the case statement, but that you're using the variable assignment in a wrong way x=grep -o abc.txt|wc -l echo $x I'm lost as to why the grep statements aren't displaying anything when I put them inside a case statement. I've also tried this (but the results are the same as those of the code above): #!/bin/bashĪ) x=grep -o abc.txt|wc -l echo $x Į) x=grep -o abc.txt|wc -l echo $x The code executes but after I enter the desired vowel nothing is displayed. The following script works perfectly (a script to print the number of occurrences of the vowel "a" inside the text file "abc.txt"): #!/bin/bashīut I want to implement this for all the vowels so I did this: #!/bin/bash I wanted to make a shell script that accepts a vowel and prints the number of occurrences of that vowel inside the text file "abc.txt".

Any decent bass rig will smother your bass frequencies. Boosting the low end of the guitar isn’t going to help you win in terms of clarity over the bass. So when a typical band that includes a bassist and a drummer and perhaps keyboards gets into the equation, you’ve got a primarily mid-range instrument that is at the same time now trying to "compete" with those instruments when you do mid-scooping. Boosting the 20Hz and 50Hz bass frequencies on an e.q. Taken in the context as a musical instrument, the guitar is primarily a producer of mid-range frequencies and is really a mid-range instrument. For years, I refused to make changes to my "perfect setup" and thought that the problem was with the other player’s equipment, style, volume – whatever. This works great at low volume, but one of the big struggles I had personally was using this type of sound in context with a band. This is known as a mid-scoop setting and when looking at a graphic equalizer is represented by a "U" shape of the various frequencies. Most rock guitarists that play through practice amps at low volume love the sound of a distorted guitar that is "full and smooth" – meaning there are deep lows and present highs that get emphasized while much of the "honking" mids are cut. I hope you find this information useful! Equalization and Volume Considerations Even all these years later, I continue to learn from various people, mostly on the Internet these days, and of course I still experiment. Much of this information comes from my own years of trial and error as well as from the valued insight of others. In fact, this "how should I set things?" question is the number one question we get here.Īs a result, I thought the time was right to discuss equalization in general and offer some EQ tips. We do get quite a lot of e-mails from folks asking about how they should set their tone controls on their amps and/or pedals.
